On The Chain Gang #6 – Writerly Gems
My LINK in the Blog Chain
THE BLOG CHAIN is comprised of a group of fiction writers from Query Tracker and Rally Storm. We thought it would be fun and insightful to acquire differing ideas and opinions on a particular writing topic.
So, we work through the chain posting one-by-one with the same general focus, and then, we repeat the process with a new topic for discussion. Check out the previous post at Heather’s blog and the next post will be published at Carolyn’s blog within the next couple of days. If you would like to read this topic from the beginning, please see Michelle’s blog.
All Blog Chain members are listed in the sidebar to the right.
My previous Link in the Blog Chain was on the topic of Angst.
This Round’s Topic is:
Share a favorite poem, quote, joke, anecdote, or anything of the sort that deals with writing, writers, the publishing industry, or the other strange and unusual tidbits that belong to our little world.
A Few Writerly Gems…
I absolutely adore quotations, and from time to time, I post The Write Quotations. You can check out those pages here and here.
One quote that really sparkles for me is from the movie MISS POTTER. It just puts me into such a writing mood and inspires me.
“There’s something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You can never quite tell where they’ll take you. Mine took me here.”
The Doorway To Imagination
W. Somerset Maugham
“Imagination grows by exercise, and contrary to common belief, is more powerful in the mature than in the young.”
Leo Tolstoy
“Art is not a handicraft. It is the transmission of a feeling which the artist has experienced.”
Eudora Welty
“To imagine yourself inside another person…is what a story writer does in every piece of work; it is his first step, and his last too, I suppose.”
David Eddings
“Start early and work hard. A writer’s apprenticeship usually involves writing a million words (which are then discarded) before he’s almost ready to begin. That takes a while.”
Tam Mossman
“Never save anything for your next book, because that possible creation may not be properly shaped to hold the thoughts you’re working with today. In fiction especially, anything that could happen, should happen.”
Robert Frost
“No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. No surprise in the writer, no surprise in the reader.”
Don’t forget…the Chain started with Michelle, the previous post was Heather’s, and the next link is Carolyn’s. Enjoy!
Leave me a COMMENT! I love hearing from you.
I think I’ve referred to the Robert Frost quote before, and I’ve heard about the million words bit before too. I’m afraid I don’t agree that writing the first words of a story is delicious–they’re often the hardest to write!

I’ve heard that “million words” thing before, but I didn’t know where it came from. It seems like such an odd designation to me.
Very interesting collection of quotes, Abi!

Oooh, I love that quote from Miss Potter and I feel the exact same way when I am beginning a new story.

Love the Robert Frost quote! There have been many times I’ve freaked out at 1am when some plot point that had been there all along suddenly came together in a wholey different way than I expected and changed EVERYTHING.
