The Legend of the Christmas Pickle

Die Weihnachtsgurke
(The Christmas Pickle)
This quaint legend has its beginnings in Germany, the land of the original Christmas tree. A special Pickle ornament was the last decoration hung on the tree on Christmas Eve. Parents would hide the pickle in the green boughs among the other ornaments and garlands. The children were bright eyed and full of laughter when they were allowed to view the tree on Christmas Eve, and the merry search for the Pickle ornament began. The observant child who found the Pickle ornament first would receive an extra little gift left by St. Nicholas.

Let me go on the record to say…It’s not as easy as one might think to find a Pickle ornament on a Christmas tree. But it sure is lots of fun!
Once the pickle is found, the Christmas festivities commence — the dinner, the presents, the caroling and merriment.
Just another one of our family traditions.
